John Butcher, soprano and tenor saxophones; Rhodri Davies, harp

The Boston Creative Music Alliance (BCMA) is proud to launch its Fall 2003 season with a September 12th performance by the John Butcher/Rhodri Davies Duo on their first-ever American tour.  These London-based improvisers have performed and recorded together extensively in groups like the Chris Burn Ensemble and London Improvisers Orchestra, and the All Music Guide called their work as a duo on 2001's Vortices and Angels (Emanem 4049), "free improvisation of a very high order.& quot;

Since his 1982 departure from the academic world, where he studied advanced physics like the theoretical properties of charmed quarks, Butcher has built an influential career as a world-renowned saxophonist.  His advanced articulation, breathing and multiphonic techniques helped redefine the saxophone's role in improvised music over the last two decades.   He has appeared on nearly 70 recordings, assimilating multitracking, taped music, live electronics and more into his trademark sound.

Davies has been challenging the traditional sound of the harp on the European improvised music scene since moving to London in 1995.  Exploring what he calls & quot;the contradictory and complimentary flux between composition and improvisation,& quot; he defies convention with his use of preparations, micro tuning, bowed strings and arco playing.  His extreme versatility also allows him to work regularly with major chamber music groups and orchestras, in collaboration with a variety of poets and dancers, in West End stage musicals, and as frequent accompanist to young soprano Charlotte Church.  More information is available on his Web site at www.rhodridavies.com.
