Malamud "bemused by the evaluation" @ Washington Post
 [ FILED UNDER: Buzz » Situations » ]

Carl Malamud, the Chairman of the Internet Multicasting Service (IMS) - the group that received the highest marks from the noncommercial evaluation team - said he hopes the ICANN board looks at all the evidence before making it's decision. "We're bemused by the evaluation that came out. We're attempting to understand it, but it's not written in a language that we're used to."

At least one observer involved in the dot-org evaluation process is questioning the ICANN staff's decision to recommend a single candidate, rather than offering the board of directors a menu of options.

Milton Mueller, who served on the evaluation team that weighed the applicants based on how well they would serve the dot-org community, said ICANN should have simply presented the board with the empirical data from the evaluations.

Mueller, a Syracuse University information studies professor and author of a recent book on ICANN, said his team ranked ISOC among the top applicants, but he also said higher ranks were given to applications submitted by two other groups - the Geneva-based Unity Registry and the Stewart Point Calif.-based Internet Multicasting Service.
