FAQ.1: Are y'all a bunch of communists? Or what? [ FILED UNDER: Answers » Free » dot » ] |
A key aspect of our proposal to run the .org TLD as a public trust is publication of all of our software as open source. Our software will have no restrictions on commercial or any other use, and will provide solutions for registries, registrars, and many others.
The registry software is the most important piece. Many people believe there should be millions of TLDs and that ICANN or others have created artificial monopolies based on a non-scarce resource: ASCII characters. One of the most articulate advocates of this view is Brad Templeton, the Chairman of EFF and inventor of the dot. His DNS essays are definitely worth reading.
But, whether you agree or disagree with Brad, there is something important to remember. Today, the process of running a top-level registry is cloaked in MIS mystique, operated by companies that have no reason or desire to tell folks exactly how they are doing things. The IMS/ISC proposal to run the .org TLD registry will provide an important reference implementation: an open, well-documented, freely available, well-run example of how a registry should operate.
If you think there should be dozens, thousands, or even millions of TLDs, the first step is to create a single open registry. That's what we want to do with .org.

According to Miguel A Paraz:
> Do you have a schedule for starting up the open development process?
Absolutely! Needless to say, we're busy working on code already ... no need to wait on the official decision, particularly since the transition period will be so short. You won't see public cvs trees and the like for a few months, but we're always happy to get additional volunteers at any time. Send me mail if you'd like to help out.
Regards,
Carl
