IMS and ISC are both public benefit corporations with a long history on the Internet. Our track record and the work we do means that we are able to attract some of the most capable people on the Internet. We don't need to paper over a boring corporate job with soon-to-be-worthless stock options. People work with us because they want to do real things on real networks.
The IMS/ISC bid is all about people. We've named the people who are personally committing to make this work. Based on our experience doing Internet programs and services of similar (and larger) scope over the last ten years, we think this is the right size staff for this job. We run a very lean staff because we are cost conscious, our staff are capable, and we outsource or automate as many support functions as possible.
In addition to our core operations staff, we use contractors who are some of the leading experts in security, routing, databases, and systems. We pay these very well known consultants a fraction of their normal market rate, and they're glad to help us out because they know that they'll be working with major league systems and a best current practices working environment.
Because our work is all public and serves as an important component of Internet infrastructure, we work with many volunteers in forums such as the IETF and NANOG, and in our daily interaction with our peers throughout the world. As a public organization with known staff, our cards are on the table. That's a huge advantage in gaining the cooperation and help of other groups on the net.
The bottom line is that 19.75 FTE is the right size staff for this job.
